Dallas Roofing FAQs
Should I choose Architectural Shingles or 3 Tab Shingles?
The most common roofing materials used in Dallas are asphalt shingles – and they have the most reasonable price. Asphalt shingles are rated in different years of life. Shingles are available from 20 year to 50 year span. The cost of asphalt shingles varies depending on what material we use.
Asphalt shingles are available in two varieties:
3 Tab Shingles and Architectural Shingles (also known as dimensional, laminated or composite shingles).
3 Tab (Flat) Asphalt Shingles
Three tab shingles are easily recognizable: they lay flat on a roof. Standard 3 tab shingles are a flat layer on the roof with no dimensional appearance.
Pro: Three tab shingles are the most inexpensive roofing material and wear well in Dallas weather extremes.
Less Favorable: Three tab shingles show – and even highlight – any inconsistencies in the roofline.
Life Span: Although three tab shingles are rated for 25-30 years – on average they only last 15-18 years. Three tab shingles do not have very high uplift ratings for wind. This means that they can be more easily damaged in high wind.
Physical Difference between Architectural Shingles and 3 Tab Shingles
Architectural shingles (also known as dimensional, laminated or composite shingles) are constructed with a heavier base mat; multiple layers of material are adhered to the base of the shingle.
This gives “dimensional” shingles a layered or three dimensional look. Architectural shingles weigh almost 50% more than the standard 3 tab shingles.
Architectural shingles raise the curb appeal of a home and actually add to the value of your home.
Aesthetic Difference between Architectural Shingles and Three Tab Shingles
Architectural (dimensional) shingles were developed in the 70′s for the high end home market. Home owners demanded an asphalt shingle product that had the architectural appearance of cedar shingles – while providing the performance of asphalt.
The texture of architectural shingles is similar to that of natural cedar shakes; created by using layered shingle construction. Architectural shingles do a great job of hiding imperfections in the roofing structure.
Performance Difference between Architectural Shingles and Three Tab Shingles
Architectural shingles typically have 25 to 30 year warranties. Because of the heavier construction, architectural shingles are less likely to warp; and they provide better wind resistance.
Standard 3 tab shingles are typically rated for 60 mph winds. Most architectural shingles are rated for winds of 80 mph up to 120 mph.
Cost Difference between Architectural Shingles and Three Tab Shingles
Architectural shingles are available in many different warranty lengths, from 25 to 50 years.
Usually, the cost of architectural shingles is only about 20% more than the traditional 3 tab shingles; although some of the higher end 50 year products can be twice as expensive.
Another factor to consider is the increased value of your home. Architectural shingles raise the curb appeal of a home and actually add to the value of your home.
